German

We enable our pupils to understand the world they inhabit better through critical engagement with text and language based on German culture. This course has at its core the aim of helping the student to examine the often-ambiguous nature of the use of language in text and to become aware of how context is involved in shaping meaning. The study of high-quality texts from German-speaking countries constitutes an essential component of the course.

A wide range of texts and resources are used so that students learn to:

Although there is no listening examination as such, students will have the opportunity to listen to a range of material which will be used as a stimulus for oral expression and, when appropriate, written communication. The course is conducted almost entirely in German and students are expected to use the target language as much as possible in the classroom.

The presentation, explanation and review of grammatical structures and vocabulary are integrated into the course so that students reach a high level of competence in speaking and writing. At Higher level it is essential that students acquire a wide range of vocabulary and develop an idiomatic style.

All texts are studied for both language learning and cultural awareness. Students are given many opportunities to acquire extensive knowledge of German-speaking countries and are encouraged to refer to it in their final examinations.
